Designing a Safer Costume Weapon Policy
A model approach to props, peace-tying, inspection, prohibited items and consistent enforcement.
An effective policy defines weapon, replica and prop categories in plain language. It explains size, material, edge, projectile and carrying restrictions; inspection procedures; peace-tying; storage; and consequences. Staff need consistent training and an escalation process. Policies should account for mobility aids and culturally significant objects without compromising safety. Visitors must comply with organizer instructions and applicable law. The directory does not certify any item as safe or legal.
