Modern festival jousts vary from choreographed theatrical shows to competitive demonstrations. Listen for the announcer’s explanation of scoring, equipment and arena boundaries. Riders, ground crew and horses follow event-specific safety procedures, so remain behind barriers and follow staff instructions. Never approach or feed an animal without permission. Applaud the horsemanship as well as the spectacle, and look for educational sessions that explain armor, lances and training.
